Big Surprise for Big Dan Turner at Spring Fling #3

Dan Turner is a strong rider who has been making a lot of progress. He hasn’t had a ton of experience in the crits, but he found himself in a good postion in Spring Fling #3 thanks to a little help from the rest of the team.

“I started out the CAT 5 race feeling decent after finishing up the 4/5 about an hour earlier… with an almost 25mph avg it was a fast one but I finished with the group. I was worried about how I would feel going into the 5 race after 45 minutes of hard riding, especially after my performance in 5 last week and I didn’t even race the 4/5. Little did I know, some of the experience in the 4/5 would help me out in this event! I knew all of the Big D boys would be pulling hard and ready to push the pace. We talked about pushing it and we did not disappoint. Get it on, gonna get in on, got to get it on!

Unfortunately, we got to the start line late and ended up towards the back of the pack of 40 riders with most of the Sante Fe guys up front. We were outnumbered for sure. At the start there was some surging and I missed getting my left foot clipped in and just as I got it clipped the guy in front of me pulled up and I came real close to falling over. Some choice words were said. By this time the front group had a slight gap down the hill so it was time to stand up and get back in it. Once I reached the back of the front group I settled in around the first turn and moved up to the middle. English Beat, Whales, JT and DanR were riding hard. Dave Whitney was hanging in there too. I knew we had a chance for someone to get on the podium. At this point I never thought it would be me.

BDT did his share of work in the fast Cat 5 field

It was going to be a short race and things would happen fast; 7 laps or 20 minutes…. just enough time to get warmed up in the 4/5 race. DanR and Whale Doggy took some good pulls! After the sprint lap, which I think DanR pulled everyone around on, I was barely hanging on to the back of the front pack. After turn one I had to stand up to catch back on. I got in and recovered slightly thru the S turn and along the back straight. The legs felt a little tight but I felt pretty good after catching back on. Whales took a pull to the front and then I took a run off the front with about 2 laps left. I dropped it back down before the S curves and got back in and let some of the other guys work the slight hill and back straight. Good time to recover. All the Big D guys were getting together… ready for the last lap. One thing I picked up on was most of the pack seemed to be real tentative going into all the hard turns. I don’t think most of the guys were comfortable hitting those turns at speed (in a pack) and wanted to slow it down before turning in (after doing this for 45min in the 4/5 I was ready and comfortable). You could gap the pack on every turn if you wanted to. With this in mind, on the last lap, I remember coming up thru the S curve and ending up towards the outside down the back straight. I knew if I hit that last right turn balls out, even on the outside, we could get the jump for the sprint. Especially down hill!

I was going to try to lead it out and began moving to the left, accelerating, as everyone was hugging the inside line (right side). I went by JT about 50yds from the final turn and said lets go hoping to lead him out along with Dan R, The Beat and Whale Doggy. I ended up passing the lead guy and was feeling pretty strong and just started mashing it. I hit the corner very hard and realized I was out front and got a good gap going down hill towards the finish. I am not a good sprinter so I decided to stay seated (I may have stood up for a bit but don’t remember) and get up over the pedals as much as possible and hammer it to the finish. Could I hold it? I got passed about half way to the finish and thought I may have a chance for 2nd or 3rd if I could hold it. Another guy got by me right before the line and I was hoping it was JT, who was the best sprinter in our group, but it was another rider. I came across the line and realized I had just finished 3rd. That was my best finish to date (never in the top 10) and like I mentioned earlier I never thought it would have been me. It looks like Big D ended up 3rd, 4th (DanR), 5th (JT), 7th(English Beat), and 9th(Whale Doggy). Great job guys and cudo’s to Dave Whitney and Dave Chapman for coming out, racing, and hanging in there.”

Summers, Rochford in Top Five; Wilson First for Team Chica-D at Perry #1

James “Skittles” Summers and Ryan Rochford came in third and fourth at the first Perry Road race. This difficult course was made even more challenging with a crazy wind, but the dynamic duo once again worked well together, with some help from Paul Aldeguer. Read Ryan’s extensive race report here. It’s a real nail-biter!

The Big D Women’s Team also known as “Team Chica-D” notched their first win of the season with a first place in the women’s 4’s by Lynn Wilson! Her race was combined with some of the Masters categories and the other women’s field, so she used those numbers to her advantage, shielding herself from the wind and making her move when the time was right.

“The pack was getting blown around a lot and you really had to be on your toes. The first lap there were no breaks and the pack pretty much stayed together until the first time up the hill when the pack began to splinter a little bit. For the most part, everybody was able to regroup as we went across the dam,” Said Wilson. “Entering the third lap, there were still several cat 4 women in the main pack and I knew the race would be decided on the last hill. I stayed tucked in the group as long as possible and as some of my competitors started to fall off the pace, I knew it was time to put the hammer down. Not looking back, I found myself unchallenged at the top. I placed 1st in my division and fourth out of the combined group!”  Look for Lynn to be a force in future races and even more of a threat for Big D as her teammates join her this season.

In other racing, Lynn Wilson’s husband, Kurt, came in 8th in the Cat4 mens race. Shawn Hawkins finished just outside the top ten in the 5’s, and the Senior contingent had a strong showing in the 60+ race, with Donavon Hottman finishing third, and the two Bills; Mason and Wells, each getting top tens.

Taton Collects Big Points at Spring Fling #2

John Taton cleaned up on points in the Cat5 race in the second week of racing at Spring Fling in Lawrence.  JT sat out last week to get ready for Froze Toes, but was out in force with his Big D teammates this week.  Taton along with Antoine Winkelmolen, Dan Turner, and Stephen Whalen worked hard to get a podium placing and collect points for the series.

Leading up to the first Sprint, Whalen lead Taton out and created a gap between the contenders and the field, “I think JT got 2nd, but once the sprint was all over, the small group reorganized and started to work together,” said Whalen. JT was winded so I helped him bridge the gap so he didn’t drop off.”  The small group of six to eight riders kept their breakaway going and helped Taton finish things off in third place.

Look for Big D to have an even bigger contingent next week in all the races, including the women’s 4’s!

Knight and Team Dominate in Cat 4/5 Spring Fling #2

This was the second weekend for the Spring Fling criterium series in Lawrence.  Shawn Knight continued his dominance with a big win in the Cat4/5 event, to go with his strong showing on points from last week.  The numbers aren’t in quite yet, but it looks like “The Bat” is the man to beat in the series.  He has been right there in all the intermediate sprints, and took fourth last week in the series opener.  Here is his recap of the race:

“The race started off with a fast pace set by VeloTech from the whistle for about 5-6 laps with an average speed around 25 mph. After the pace slowed, members of Big D grouped and were ready for the first sprint. The wind was coming out of the NW and there would be a headwind for the sprint. The bell sounded for and the pace quickly picked up again. I was sitting in the pack with Whalen, Twan, John T and Ron close by. With the wind coming from right to left on the back strait, one rider jumped and no one wanted to chase. The field realized what had happened and attempted to cut the gap only to allow Ron and myself to be set-up for a head wind sprint. Ron lead me through the last right handed corner with 200 yards left for the line. I had a good cadence and put my head down and finished the sprint in second. We were not able to catch the lone break away rider.

Immediately after the sprint Twan broke off the front to attempt to break up the field, and it seemed to work. He almost dropped me as it was very difficult to hang onto the tail end of the group.

The bell rang for the second sprint, and I mentioned to Ron that this was set-up for him. Positioned behind a couple other riders, shielding himself from the wind, Ron rounded the final corner in second position and ended up third on the sprint.

Eight laps left into he race and it was Big D’s turn at the front. First, Whalen jumped on the inside on the back-side of the course making every one on the front panic and attempt to catch. The pace was quickly increasing, and as they caught Steve on the back stretch, the group came together and slowed, then it was Twan’s turn to go off the front and the same thing happened. With a couple laps left in the race, John T and Steve were planning a break, but Steve got boxed in and John was by himself. This was excellent for Big D because we did not have to chase and it made Velo Tech and other riders work harder. As they pulled John back, the bell rang for the final lap and everyone was fighting for position. Twan was in front of me, and Ron was positioned to the right, and Whalen and John T. were right behind me. On the back side of the course, as we were going through the “S” turns, one rider got pushed off the road and into the grass, but was able to stay upright. The race was approaching the back straight, and Big D was positioned perfectly. It was Twan, Ron, then myself on the left side of the pack, shielded from the wind by the other riders. The pack attempted to move to the left, but there was no room. Ron got pushed off the road and into the gravel, and made an excellent recovery to get back onto the road and only lost a couple pedal strokes in the process.

About 700 yards to go, Twan powered up his big diesel engine and accelerated with Ron on his wheel and me attempting to hang on. Twan got the three of us in the front of the main group with 450 yards and one corner left into he race. Ron Marney took over from there, powering his way into the corner with me attempting to stay on his wheel, but unfortunately, another rider cut in on my right side and had the inside line on the last right hand corner before the finish. Ron increased his speed through the corner and the other guy broke for his sprint at the apex. I came out of Ron’s draft and moved over behind the other rider with a high cadence in attempt to stay with the him. I put my head down with about 100 to go and I could see that I was gaining, but it was going to be close. With about 20 yards left I had more speed and was even with the other rider and took the victory by less than a bike length.

Ron Marney held on for 3rd place. It was a great race for Big D, and I could not have done it with out the help of my awesome teammates.

Afterward, a member from another team was talking about how well Big D worked together for the victory, and that they wish they could get members of their team to do the same thing.

Again I would like to thank John T, Steve W, Twan and Ron for their hard efforts in getting Big D to the top of the Podium.”
